Young Carers

The Young Carers group at Oaklands has been running for over 13 year  with many trips and weekly lunchtime sessions. We have students from all year groups that attend the group and we currently have 5 members of staff who are a part of the Young Carers team. Part of our school mission is that nobody gets left behind, and it is so important that the young carers within our community have a place they can get together to share experiences with other young people who may be in a similar situation to them. We meet weekly on a Wednesday lunchtime in the Sports Hall and students have the opportunity to use the sports equipment, but it also provides an opportunity for staff to check in with students and for them to discuss any concerns that they may have. As a school community we must stand by each other and by standing in solidarity with our young carers we help to support them to have an equitable school experience.

Updated Summer  2023

Young Carers  offered to new students

Assemblies were delivered early in the autumn to promote the group and numbers are starting to rise again. Part of our school mission is that nobody gets left behind, and it is so important that the young carers within our community have a place they can get together to share experiences with other young people who may be in a similar situation to them.

The group has also  also just had our first trip to Fort Purbrook to have a go at some archery. The trip, organised by Mrs Kelly, one of the Young Carers staff members, was fantastic and students excelled with their archery skills. A bit of friendly competition between boys and girls allowed for a fun time to be had by all. We hope to run more trips this year.

If you feel that your child would benefit from being part of this group, please encourage them to come on a Wednesday lunchtime or email me on l.jones@oaklandscatholicschool.org.
